Because it's a prototype M5 wagon, the only one ever built. Rumor in the community says it was built for the head of BMW M as his personal car.

Its pretty cool, they should have changed it up a little more and made the 2 door version of the E34 the next gen 6-series. But that might of hurt the 8-series.

But closest competition would have come from Mercedes.
As far as the seating goes, really the 560SL would not have been competition. As far as the power goes, only the european market version of the 560SL would have been competitive.

A very cool car, gotta love the interior layout of old BMWs. A proper driver's car.
