New Way to Steal Your Car
At Honda, well my dealership anyways, you have to provide proof of ownership and give your I.D. to us.
We have had people come in the back and write down the VIN's of a couple of Si's(99-00) but luckily, noone has stolen them yet.

This will not happen at my parts department! You have to prove to me that you own the vehicle beforer I will cut anything. End of discussion. Some other dealers are not as strict as I am, I will admit that.

I don't think since I've been here(at my work), we've had anyone try this.
To people who work at other dealerships... Do people just come to the back of the dealership and stop at the "hooked" up cars? I feel very uneasy when it happens, but I'm too busy to stop and say something.
This does work, I worked briefly at a dealership. We needed keys for a couple of vehicles. A 02 Neon, 01 F-150, and a 01 TL. Went to the dealerships in my street clothes with the vin, and all 3 cut me the key, no questions asked. Easy as pie, costed about $6 a car.
hrm... I can see it now.. hit up auto trader.. find some listings with VINS.. call the person ask.. is the car out where I can see it.. or do you drive it to work... or keep it in the garge or something * no I leave it in front of my house when Im at work feel free to stop by and look* OK... THANKS

You would think the Dealerships would require
verification first.
(Naw -- They just want to "serve the customer"so they
can make a buck.)
Seems that car thieves have found yet another way to
steal your car
or truck without any effort at all.
The car thieves peer through the windshield of your
car or truck, write down the VIN # from the label on
the dash, go to the local car dealership and request a
duplicate key based on the VIN #.
I didn't believe this e-mail, so I called a friend at
Chrysler Dodge and
pretended I had lost my keys. They told me to just
bring in the VIN #,
and they would cut me one on the spot, and I could
order the keyless
device if I wanted.
The Car Dealer's Parts Department will make a
duplicate key from the
VIN #, and collect payment from the thief who will
return to your car. He
doesn't have to break in, do any damage to the
vehicle, or draw
atention to himself. All he has to do is walk up to
your car, insert
the key and off he goes to a local Chop Shop with your
vehicle.
You don't believe it? It IS that easy.
To avoid this from happening to you, simply put some
tape (electrical tape,
duct tape or medical tape) across the VIN Metal Label
located on the
dash board. By law, you cannot remove the VIN, but you
can cover it so
it can't be viewed through the windshield by a car
thief.
I urge you to forward this to your friends before some
other car thief
steals another car or truck.
I slipped a 3 x 5 card over the VIN

i was on a ride along with the cops and unfortunately it's a felony to have your vin covered....although most cops don't mess with that stuff b/c there is too much paperwork it is still a felony...just to let everyone know
it was a good idea though...just thought i'd share the advice the cops gave to me
