Don't buy one until your finances allow for it. As much as I don't want to say this, the smart decision would be to pay all your debt down and buy one in the cooler weather when no one else is riding. You'll save yourself a fortune that way! Then be ready for next summer.
Don't try to buy in the peak if you're stretching yourself. Prices are the highest they'll get when the weather is nice!

If you do some research (which I did a lot of)...the Honda and Yamaha models were consistently near the top followed closely by Suzuki. A 636 was my first choice in 600's until I did a little more researching. When making a decision on which bike to buy......styling and fitment to the rider is prob' the deciding factor in most cases.
