it seems youre into imports and thats fine but have you considered a mid 90s camaro z28.

275hp lt1 with a 6 speed manual, cant beat it bang for buck.
and the motor will last, just some things need replacing now and then

i drove a 2.0 golf 5spd the other day and hated it.

i know the 1.8t or vr6 is much better but D A M N that thing was an incredibly slow shitbrick.

Why because it is slow? (thats why they have the nickname 2.slo) They aren't supposed to be fast the 2.0 is good on gas, really good actually and thats it's purpose, if you want power you need to get the 1.8t which iirc there was a guy here making like ~400hp on the stock internals or something a couple of years ago. As for the VR's well thsoe are pretty good and those plus turbo are sick, a friend of mine has a VRt in a GTi and makes like 400+ hp at like 8 or 10lbs of boost on a T04E setup... which with some driving skills is good for about mid to high 12's 13's if you just plain suck... VW's are great cars, and are VERY reliable if you don't mess with them...
