If you had $20k what car would you get?
Buy an economical, reliable pre-owned car, and bank the rest. Look for something with 5.5% or greater interest and make some money ... forget it's in the bank is the best thing to do.
A nice looking 2 door sports car that is a decently reliable mid-12 second daily and gets somewhat decent gas (17 mpg+). I have had 5.0s and LT1s and just can't insure v8s right now.
As for the guys saying to keep the money and invest it, I know that's smart, but I make about $55k a year and I am young and single and have NOTHING right now to spend my money on (other then rent and cell phone). I have been driving around nice economical boring cars for the last 2 years and I just need a fun car again. I am obsessed with high performance cars and is the only thing that I don't get bored with. So to me, this is my investment. But I do appreciate the input.

$15,995 for this track-ready Mustang. Not gonna find a better deal for the money.
buy a nice stock car, it will be reliable and newer cars have pretty good mileage, buying a used modded car has the opportunity for you to pay for they're mistakes
