Buy a 240sx shell - $500
Buy a 180sx front clip - ~$2000 redtop
parts for swap and interior nicknacks - $500
that's about $3000 right there...and you have a turbo (rhd if you want to take the time) RWD car. Spend the other $2000.00 on suspension and some wheels/tires.

I have a '97 Neon that I'd let go pretty cheap.. They make great road race and autocross cars, and can be pretty impressive on the drag strip too. A lot of people are doing SRT4 swaps into them, and you'd be surprised how cheap it can be to have it up and running. You could accomplish it on your budget.

You can buy a nice NA6 for $3,000-3,500, and that's NICE. Spend the other $1.5-2k on wheels, tires, and suspension.
Take to track and enjoy cruising with open top.

Miatas are good if you have a second car. Within 100 miles of my zipcode on autotrader, there are 4 for under 4,000.... I just wouldn't own one as my only vehicle....
