getting License in North Carolina, Insurance MANDATORY without car???
Not so bad now that the laws are being repealed but a front plate still ruins my car; taxes are cheaper....
The work around, as told by the teller at DMV is to get his name on a bank account that comes to my address, as stated above. When I went to the post office, the guy there told me that I can write up a lease that he is renting from me and that is legally binding that he is living with me as well. I saw someone mention that they did that for NC.
I am trying to get it, because he got a ticket the other day while he was dropping me off at my office so that he could use my car because he did not have his international licenses on him. He does have his Jamaican licenses, but the international license from Jamaica is like a mini book. He had forgotten it in NC. I want him to get a license before we go to court just to avoid any unknown issues that they might try to pull, knowing how VA laws sucks.
It does suck to have to pay insurance just for the occasional situation where he has to drive though. I am going to see if I can get his name on my utility bill and see if that would help any.
Thanks for the suggestions though. Yes, VA license does suck, and I didnt want him to get one here because of the ticket laws here, but NC laws with not owning a car sucks worse, so we are going to try to get him the license here.
For the record, he has been driving in Jamaica for a about 2 years prior to coming up here, and anyone who have ever been to Jamaica knows that everyday driving is like driving on an obstacle race track. Its a fun adventure everyday. You HAVE to have good driving skills to drive there.
NNO policy FTW!
Named-Non owner policy that follows the driver as opposed to following the vehicle.
Also some benefits to having NC insurance is that it is a take-all-comers state. You can have 15 DUI's and a liscense suspended and any company has to insure you.
All liabilities are paid out through the state.
Typically insurance is very cheap in North Carolina.
And they don't typically reciprocate any violations out of state. So you can have a shitty record in Virginia, get a DL in North Carolina and it won't transfer your record.
