I think Im going to learn to do body work on the side, go buy 300 gallons of bondo, and start collecting tires to sell.

how many events have you been where they bring extra body parts because they know they are going to crash it at one time or another? but i can see why you think its less dangerious than road racing...because well drifting is much slower and happens at lower speeds. :P

there are retards out there that will go out and do a highspeed drift on their first try. THAT is the whole point of this thread.
when you start talking about events, you talk about controlled events rather than on the streets. like i said, in a drift event, you end up fucking up the car, not yourself. i've never seen anyone bring any extra body panels at drift events. ppl don't do that... if you look at the d1 competitions, if they fuck up bumper, they drift w/o it. if they bend their muffler, they hammer it the fuck out. they put new body parts after, not during, the event. and if you're a newbie and go to one of the drift day events, you'll probably have someone "coaching" you, so you won't do anything stupid.

if you talk about the streets, then yes, i agree. drifting can be more dangerous because of retards, hehe. but then again, you can't really road race, per se, on the streets, haha. technically :P.

i just think it's potentially less dangerous because, like you mentioned, you're going slower than road racing or drag racing, so there would be less damage done. granted you can slide into a wall, but then again, you can also do that in any type of racing.

autocross?? seriously, when was the last time anyone ever heard of an unsanctioned autocross event? a bunch of cars pull up into a kroger parking lot, guys jump out, throw down cones, drive around until the cops show up and then bolt. i think drifting looks fun, and id love to learn how to do it, but i think its funny how many new drifters are coming out of the woodworks. and how many of you drifters were doing it 5 years ago? 2 years ago?
drifting is NOT a form of racing. period. it takes skill, but where is the actual race? how many of you still use the e-brake to 'drift'? i can tell you how many new drifters are going to use it....all. i cannot wait to see single cars parked on the side of embankments and in ditches because awesome little teeny boppers thought they could drift through some random turn.

yo dawg, i'm gonna be cool like takumi. AE86 is fastest car EVEAR cuz it weighs like -43 lbs yo. i'm gonna be a mad fly drifter. i'm gonna go buy some old beater RWD import and find a way to put drifter on my license plate. that is 500 cool points automatically, it lets everyone know how much of a badass drifter i am, and how i will own them all in gum tape death match. i'm going to drive like a douche everywhere and relentlessly tell all my friends and random peopel how much ofa badass i am because i can pull tight drifts around every corner. my stock suspension is set up for drift yo. i wish i was japanese. then i'd be 10x more of a badass. i'd be total JDM yo. unfortunately i'll have to settle for trying to be the next eminem.

(note: no offense is intended to the true enthusiasts who are fans of drifting.. i just have lots of fun mocking idiot rice boys )

hehe. unsanctioned autox is like unsantioned road racing. i guess you could consider cruises down windy roads at very high speeds unsancionted autox/road racing, haha.

i would've been drifting 5 yrs ago if i had a car 5 yrs ago, haha. yea i guess you could say that drifting isn't a form of racing, but i think for our purposes, it's just easier to put everything in the same category, haha. i think ppl (read newbies) see it as racing because of initial d where they race down the mountain while drifting... i guess it's more of a 1v1 competition.

and no i don't use my ebrake, but still consider myself a relatively newbie to drifting. well i've never even really tried to until recently when i made myself a little spin knob, just to see what it'd be like.

i just thought the idea of someone getting out and throwing cones down and racing was funny. im not knocking the desire to learn, because i want to, too. but people are talking about it too much. i see it all the time whenever someone (on any board) asks about getting a new car. some clown inevitably says something like "s13 so you can drift" and thats tiresome.

i couldnt agree more with what u said.

drifting isnt even a fad yet and already i grow weary of it. i think its the idea that (like weavil says) take perfectly good tires and tear them up as fast and as pretty as you can.

You take 240's that handle great, can make great power and dont use any of it because your doing a great big/long burnout.

but to each his own...or watever.

I just found it funny that in the USA Today article, they havea link to a flash commentary about "how to drift" or whatever. The drawing of the car in the example is none other than a MKIV.

Represent.

As for the drifting thing. Yeah, it's not a sport or a race. It's kinda like watching baseball I guess, shitty on TV, can be fun in person, and no real athletic talents, you just gotta work at it until you get the basics right.
