I have a 75 dollar Radio Shack one. It has a VG2 detector/shut off.

Put it right beside the A-pillar, there are only a few angles from which the cops can see it. I also have a little stuffed animal sitting on top of it to hide it. I have had 2 cops look directly at it and one had to look under it to get my VIN # and they didn't even say anything.

Even if they get you on VG2 they have to be able to see the Device before they can search your car. Unless you're careless and let them sneak up behind you, all you have to do is take the device down, stuff it under your seat, and put the power source in your glove box and you're set, just deny the whole thing.

PS: Local Cops Rarely have VG2 due to its expense. I have only been tagged by State cops and only 3 times at the most.

ditto...mine works great...if i see a cop i just slide it right off its holder and set it down...if they do take it...they usually give it back with the serial numbers scratched...so look for this if they decide to take it. without the serial #s you cant get it serviced.

they look at the actual unit and see someone has scratched it off...which means you were caught using it where it is illegal

Cost less then a regular patrol car. 20-21k if i remember correctly.

An officer can confiscate your radar detector, but must give it back at or after the court date. Since most people who get caught prepay the offense, most officers just write down the serial number and give it back at the time of the offense. I cant think of any reason to scratch off the serial number though, no clue why that would be done.

they scratch it off because its being used where it is illegal. Valentine wants them to be used where it is legal. One thing cops have done for a while is scratch the serial off. if this is done...when you sent it back to the manufacterer to get it serviced...they look at the serial number to see what program to load and service it for new software for new radars being used....can you see where that goes if the serial number isnt there??

There is nothing under any code section in the state of virginia that i am aware of that would give permission to remove a serial number from anything, even if it was used illegally. They dont remove serial numbers from guns, why do it from radar detectors. It should not happen. It may be under certain jurisdiction's operation procedures, but I would think that would make them liable in case the detector was reported stolen later, victim could come back on the department and say it is untraceable now due to them removing the serial number. Where did this supposedly happen at that the serial number was removed?

My boss had it happen to his...they do it all the time. Another guy i know had it happen to his too. It makes perfect sense...and the unit still works...you just cant get it updated.
