Depends on what you want, but really the evo is a better car to start with. Strong internals and good drivetrain. Subarus are notorious for their drivetrains taking a shit on itself under high horsepower
In this specific case, I would say the subaru has the stronger drivetrain of the two. The STi is known for having a really strong transmission. However, the evo 5-speed isn't bad either.
I was making the same decision a couple months ago and I ended up going with the evo. The only complaint I have about the car is that I wish it had slightly more torque, but thats not really a huge issue. Evo's are way more uncommon around here, so it was something different. Plus as others have said, the evo has the better motor of the two in terms of being able to take power once you start modifying it.
