go to the grocery and get 3 gallons of DISTILLED water, do not use tap water or anything else, you probably won't need nearly 3, but its better than not having enough, i usually use about 2... then go to your local bike dealer and get your choice of the following A)Engine Ice, its blue, good stuff, not AMA approved for racing this year but it had been in the past, for your purpose it will work just fine, in short its essentially a pre-mix of water, coolant, and a water wetter like chemical, but i've spoken to the owner and he assures me theres much more to it than that, and he was a very nice knowledgable guy, its what i run in my gsxr off the track or B)Liquid Performance racing coolant, its orange, i believe this is AMA approved for racing but don't quote me, basically same as engine ice, your dealer might only have one of the two or C)distilled water, water wetter, and your choice of coolant(i like honda pro racing coolant, but anything is good as long as it says its safe for aluminum)
ok now that you have all that, take off your side fairings, remove the radiator cap, detach the water hose that goes into the water pump, and the hose that exits the radiator on the other side, drain all the old coolant out from those hoses, get a friend if you aren't comfortable to help you lean the bike to both sides to let more of it get out, i also pull the hose on the resevoir and let the old coolant drain out of there.... then put the hoses back and fill your system w/ pure distilled water until its full, you'll have to let some air bubbles come out, once the level doesn't drop anymore lean the bike from side to side and then fill again... then w/ the radiator cap off start the bike and let it warm up, let it warm up until the thermostat opens, you'll know its open if the temp starts to drop rapidly, or also you'll notice the water level drop at the radiator cap, keep filling it, i also rev it a bit, then i reattach the radiator cap and let it run for quite a few minutes, reving it occasionally to get the water nice and run through the system... then do what you did initially to drain the water as if it was the old coolant, but be careful it can be from luke-warm to near boiling so use gloves or a rag and keep your face away from hoses when you pop them off... that should be adequete, but i repeat that last step twice and flush it w/ water twice, the first time it usually comes out pretty diluted w/ coolant, the second time it should be pretty much pure water coming out, once your satisfied that the old coolant is flushed out then fill it up w/ whatever your choice of coolant is, remember to lean the bike side to side, and let it warm up enough to let the thermo. open again, rev it to bleed air bubbles, all that good stuff, don't forget to fill up the resevoir... keep an eye on it for the next couple days, you will most likely have to top off the resevoir, but if you bled it good it won't run completely out on you
that was alot to type, but thats all there is to it, and its much easier to do, if you can change oil, you can flush your coolant... i do it twice a season personally, but i think the factory recommends every season or two... i'm big into maintanaince and it only costs say 20$ and 30 minutes to an hour of your time
oh and about the radiator fan switch, its impossible to hurt anything if you do it right... your thermostat switch will have two wires coming off of it, all you do is tap into those wires w/ the two wires coming off the radio shack's rocker switch, its impossible to do it wrong, the only thing you could do is have the wires backwards which would simply make the on/off position of the rocker switch itself backwards, but that doesn't matter... also if you tap into the wires, not splice them, then the fan will stil work on its own at the pre-set temperature... i mounted my switch on my right handle bar and covered the wires in black hose from lowe's, blends in w/ the two throttle cables coming off of the same handle bar perfectly
this is the switch i used
and i used these posi-tap connectors to tap into the thermostat's wires, they have a needle in them that just screws into the wire, no splicing necessary
