With an exhaust, intake, chip, & pulley upgrade, mid-to-upper 400wHp is VERY common, and pretty much a brainless task of accomplishing.
That being said, I believe that generalizing drive train loss as a certain percentage (such as 15% - 18%) is complete bullshit.
Anyone care to argue with me?

My drivetrain loss is somewhere in the ballpark of 2.35%
fc735, I've seen you at fast freddies a couple times, and some in Christiansburg I think. Nice car man, is it fully converted to STi or did you just put the Sti intercooler on it? I always wondered. When are you gonna start goin' back to freddies? It has been way too cold lately. You may have seen my truck there, but there are so many black ones its hard to remember. I always park next to a yellow xtreme with racing stripes and a white 89 S-10 with maroon stripes.
oh yes, i know your truck, and i see you almost every day on the roads in cburg. the wagon is still at the house, waiting on my tranny to get finished. it has changed a lot since you saw it last. that wasnt even an STi intercooler.....just a stencil.
however......now it is a modded stage 4, about 425 crank hp.
yeah, you hang with lil vinny......i enjoy givin that lil bastard a hard time
still deciding on whether or not to do the STi 6 speed or just do a gearset.....money is the deciding factor. retail is over 7500 for the 6speed......sucks not having a "common" car, although the WRX is getting more and more common everyday. i would have to kill myself if i had a blue sedan

Here's my logic...
Let's say you're comparing two 240sx drivetains... One has a stock engine that puts out 155 Hp, the other has a fully built engine that's putting out 500 Hp.
They both have the same exact transmission. Same gear oil in it, etc. However, when using the 15% loss factor, the transmission on the 155 Hp engine has a loss of only 23 Hp, while the transmission on the 500 Hp engine has a loss of 75 Hp.
So how is it possible for the same exact transmission to have different mechanical losses?
...This is the reason I call percentage losses bullshit, and should only be used as a very poor rule-of-thumb.

Maybe I'll put into another example that I'm more familiar with. In computers, most processors or processing systems have an error rate. For instance, system memory normally has a maximum accepted error rate ( for this example, say 1 out of every million instructions causes an error). The more instructions you push through that device, the more errors occur, so the error rate is expressed as a percentage ( i.e. 1/1000000th ). I really haven't been working on or studying engines for long, so please correct me if I'm wrong. I'm just taking a stab at it.
Yeah, vinnie is my boy. He finally moved out, you should come up to his apartment and get hang with us sometime. At this very moment im taking a break from installing my ram air. I'm negotiating whether or not to put a screen in it to stop the bugs and stuff from going to the air filter. What do you guys think? It's my first setup I've done, so I'm just using basic logic to hook it up. Should work pretty well though. Hopefully I can get the top speed past 135 without using the death juice.
