you need to remove the timing covers and set the crank/cams @ TDC. then you turn the crank (car must be in neutral) and rotate the crank one full revolution. notice where the timing marks line-up before and after the revolution. turn it a few more times just to be sure.

damn, that timing tensioner on the 3sgte has got to be the biggest pain in the ass ever. i agree with checking a lot before puting it all back together since the thing is such a pain to get to. i had to do mine like 10 times before i got the timing right! good luck.
