2008 Tidewater Sports Car Club autocross schedule
Had a BLAST today! The course, as usual, was amazing. If it wasnt so damn cold, it would have been a great day. I'm glad the weather held up (at least for the afternoon session). That long sweeper at the end was great, really picked up some speed on that thing
I just got a new car and am really itching to play with it... I stumbled across you guys a few years ago on raceday at Fentriss and it looked like a blast, but my old Camaro just wasn't autocross material (by that, I mean I'd have had to get new tires and fix the battery and- worse yet- clean it out). But no such problems now
The problem is, I'm a complete novice. It's not so much that I'm afraid of embarrassing myself (I am) but I haven't even put the car through its paces yet, letalone feel ready to race. Is there anywhere in hampton roads I can drive it to its limit and learn how to corner? Are there private tracks or autocross-friendly open parking lots or anything like that? I don't mind driving a bit; $20 worth of gas is a hell of a lot cheaper than getting busted for going 100mph over the speed limit on 64.

Nowhere legal other than here. Come out, you wont be the first novice and sure wont be the last. I was in your shoes about 9 months ago, and I got hooked really quick.
I was afraid of that- thought there might be something around here, though. My neighbor (they drive Mini Coopers) mentioned "the dragon" which I gather is a windy road in NC that's rarely patrolled.
Besides signing up the week before and paying the entry fee, what do I have to know or do to race? Are helmets and numbers and everything provided beforehand? Is there time between each heat for everyone to walk the course, or would I need to come early to help set up? As coincidence has it, I work at Little Creek, so base access isn't an issue.
Edit: goddamn, that road is on the border with Tennessee... never mind.

This past event was my first time out. You can borrow a helmet if you don't have one. You can use the tape they have there for the #'s, or use your own magnetic numbers. They just ask that they are bigger than 8" I believe. They will have a seperate walk through of the course for novices before the morning and afternoon sessions start. I wouldn't reccomend you going somewhere like "the dragon" before getting experience on the track if you don't feel comfortable with your car. It's a blast, and you don't have to worry about embarrasing your self. Just ask questions and take it slow if need be.
Everyone has to start somewhere, and everyone was in your shoes when they first started out.
The best thing to do is sign up and actually do it; but let whoever know that you're a novice and they should provide you someone to walk the course with and ride with you giving pointers and whatnot.
"The Dragon" has become quite the attraction too, its very known to the local fuzz what goes on down there.
