fucking ignorant shit. the 1.8t is a nice engine, and i have actually thought about getting one, but any of their other ones are junk.

the diesels are not too bad, but i have had issues with them too. their clutch design is funky, and i am not going to begin to mention electrical *cough* lucas *cough*

You said it and its the MAIN reason I very seldom do any work on anyones cars but my own. 9 times out of 10 a simple light bulb change turns into a restoration on some POS car that you cant convince the owner he/she is wasting their money on. It never fails that to help someone out I put an alternator on someones car then 6 months down the road their fuel pump dies and its my fault, Im an idiot, Im taking advantage of them all because Im the one who touched the car last. No thanks....I'll stick to avoiding John Q Public as much as possible and wrench on my own junk.

ZeRo_c0oL@work,
It sounds like your trying to make the best of the situation so I wish you luck in things turning out for the good.

ignorant? are you insane? I recognize and admit that VW's are on the bottom end of the German todem pole; My car isn't a 911 GT3 or an SL55, and I can handle that.. but from an engineering point of view, German machinery as a whole are some of the most advanced pieces of work (work, not shit.. lol) that you're going to see anytime soon as far as I'm concerned. I'm biased, and I feel that you most likely are too--as a mechanic.

I'm sure you read about the new DSG transmission didn't you? I know we're comparing apples to oranges--motors to transmissions, but to call German engineering ignorant is a crime. I think they're too smart for their own good.

I know you're going to want to sit here and argue about it, but lets save that for a new thread. I'll be glad to go back and forth with you about it... You're set in your opinion because you hate them from a mechanics point of view.

VR6's aren't that bad. Audi's are a different ballgame; Take an Audi 1.8T and a VW 1.8T.. They're essentially the same motor, but sit them side by side and you'll quickly realize that the VW 1.8T is much more user friendly when it comes to doing ANYTHING under the hood, IMHO. Well, I guess that's another argument in itself. It's not worth the argument.... I'll defend German engineering until the day I die.

Thanks for your positive support everyone... It's a bad situation to be in.

Believe me, if I were confident enough to do a job of this nature on my own, I would have. I don't really have an ideal location to perform a job like this on my own for that matter either... I've got a gravel driveway on a bit of a slope, so you mix gravel and an uneven surface, and someone who's never done anything that in-depth as far as a transmission. When I had my old 90 Wolfsburg Jetta that I could clunk around in as a beater when I first got this particular GTI, I would have dove head first underneath the car and tried to do it myself before I would take it anywhere and pay high dollar labor costs, but I want the job done right on my 2003, and I'm not trying to take any chances--especially since it's my only car at this point in time, it's daily driven, and it's my mode of transportation. I can't afford for it to be down any more than necessary..

but anyway, thanks guys!

yes, i am insane (ask just about anyone that has ever met me, who else will race a metro? )

i look at things from an auto technicians point of view, while most people on here look at cars from an "enthusiast" point of view. they are the ones that seem to think that cause they own a certain kind of car, they
1. know everything about it
2. its better then every other car out there
3. dont look at other designs

all cars are pieces of shit, some are bigger then others.

one of the main reasons i hate german cars: track style wiring diagrams. the originators of these disasters should be murdered auschwitz style.

.

no shit. i have bent over backwards to help people out in my time, and the main thing i have gotten out of it is an assfucking (both financially and time wise) i have had several dealings that were not done the way they should have, and the main thing that has come from it is that i dont do much of that shit anymore (main reason is that i have a fleet of emergency vehicles that HAVE to be done before any customer cars. 23 police cars, 11 ambulances, and five firetrucks that are always in the shop for maint. or repairs.) the last big job i did wound up sitting on my lift for over two months, mainly waiting on parts and companies sending repair parts etc. i lost more money on that job then i had thought, due to lost bay space, time dealing with suppliers, etc. yes, i got the job done, but there really was no profit at all on it. and i dont do this shit for free....

You just got all anti-enthusiast on me dude.. lol.. I don't even know how to respond.

All cars are pieces of shit? I want to agree with you but I just can't bring myself to do it right now, despite the mood that I'm in tonight. I will say that they all have their flaws, and some are actually over-engineered/over-designed. My ECU is too friggin' smart, truthfully...

any ecu made to be OBDII compliant is too smart....for the modding end of things.

c'mon......

"my car is a piece of shit" if the world will just realize this shit, it would be a much nicer place

My car is a piece of shit. It's a nice piece of shit, but in the end, I do agree... they're all beautiful overpriced pieces of shit... and they all break eventually. I realize that. I still love my piece of shit car though.
