Everyone agrees that an individual involved should be able to tape a public officer or official.

Problem is that the ruling extends to public places and those outside of the "both party" limitation. This permits paparazzi and other nosy people to videotape you giving private information (social security #, criminal record, address, etc) to the officer.
It has long been held that there is no expectation of privacy in public places. Openly recording has been allowed by the courts for many years, even in two-party states. This ruling is in line with previous rulings in many different states such as Massachusetts and Pennsylvania. What is not allowed is secretly recording, which is a violation of wiretapping laws. Why should you not be permitted to record anything that you can see or hear in public? How is it any different than someone who has a good memory?

You do not have to provide your ssn to the police. The ssn is not supposed to be used as an identification number and other, better methods of identification are available to the officer. Once identity is confirmed, the officer has access to your ssn so it does not need to be provided in public. Your criminal record and address are public information that are easily obtained with only a name so what's the concern?

If guys with 5 figure lenses were a real concern, you'd have heard about it before...in the vast majority of other states that have always allowed this. The sky isn't falling, chicken little. That said, I wouldn't be surprised if you, as a federale, honestly took issue with this ruling.
