Warranty voided by racing
No one's going to warrany a car that you beat the shit out of, whether it was built to have the shit beat of it or not. It's just not good business.
The speeds you hit in autoX are lower than public roads, but you're driving the car considerably harder than you legally can on a public road. It doesn't matter how fast you're going, you're still increasing the chances of your drivetrain/suspention failing.
If you owned a car company, sold a car to an 18yo kid, the kid went out and drag raced it and autoX's it, then blew a piston, you sure as fuck wouldn't want to fix it either. So shut up.

spic's right, its mostly about business. nothing in that article surprised me, what surprised me is that some people here actually thought that the dealerships would cover it if you fucked up your car because you launched it at 3k all day at the dragstrip or whatever. when I started modding my car, I knew that it was going to void the warranty. That's why I didn't waste my money on extending the warranty.
warranties aren't worthless, but their intended for people who leave the car stock and drive it conservatively. And even if you like to drive fast, as long as you aren't reckless they won't have any real way of knowing what you were doing if its on the street, so don't worry about it.
the downside to that article, imo, is that with the increasing tensions today over street racing and everything, things like that discourage you from taking it to a track where its more safe. I'm not trying to sound high and mighty, i like to play around on the street too, but how can authorities & manufacturers urge people not to street race, but then say that if you do take it to a track that all bets are off? That kind of stuff would make me more likely to never go to a track if I had a warrantied vehicle

Yeah Yeah Yeah we all get the business aspect of it. So do the insurance companies have anything that will cover you if you destroy your car drag racing or autox'ing?

Racing at an autoX? Yes.
Technically, autoX is a "driving school" and insurance will cover if you tag a light pole...but I wouldn't expect to have the same insurance company for very long afterwards.

Now that's stupid. If I was an insurance company I'd insure drag racing before I insure autoxing.

I like how the article focuses on Mitsubishi... those bastards are prob so uptight about warrantees because they're poor as fuck and don't wanna go in the hole any more than they are.
and it's bullshit that they're not using the internet to find people... how else would they do it?

FYI you can buy a separate insurance policy for track events. I think it's like $500 for a years coverage, but hey your guaranteed to be covered if you ball the car up.
Af for the while "driving school" classification paying off, it really doesn't anymore. Insurance companies (I work for GIECO) have gotten far my savy when dealing with these thigs. If I destroyed my car at VIR it's be tough to get insurance to cover it eventhough it's a "school" I have Allstate and I think it's a kinda "one time thing" They'll cover me once, but then I'm dropped.
