mountain biking
Not suspension exactly, but the way the seat goes in and the way it's constructed the seat is cushioned. I had one for a while. I took my oldest daughter riding in it all the time. When she was really small I just strapped her car seat into it. It has lap and shoulder harnesses like a seat in a car.

this was a cool topic to read through. i go to vt, and all my friends are lazy as shit so i feel lethargic all the time. i do some hiking around the area every other weekend or so and get canoeing and stuff but biking sounds like it'd be a fun change. haven't done it since middle school lol, but still.
i'm a big guy, 6ft 280, if i was going to spend up to say $400 in a bike what would you recommend cosmos? I'm not interested in building one at all. All i remember from being younger was my dad always swore by shimano shifters, but I had one of those crap out on me so who knows. my dad also had me eyeing trek bikes forever when i couldn't afford them, and from what you've said it doesn't sound like I could afford one still lol. I don't really care a whole lot about brand anyways.
I'm not looking to do anything hardcore... but there are a few biking paths through the national forest here and a few other spots and I see people bike by when I'm camping and it always looks fun.

I would recommend going to www.mtbr.com and asking in the Clydesdale section. There are a LOT of very knowledgable people there. The one thing I would warn you about, however, is that most of them on there have large bank accounts, so even when you tell them your budget, you will get a lot of suggestions out of your price range.
You may be best off looking for something used. I just picked up this bike off Ebay:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...tem=7242413415
That bike sold for over $2000 new. Honestly, I don't know how I got it so cheap. Crossing my fingers that I didn't get screwed...
I'm a bigger guy myself, and if you aren't going to spend a lot of money, I would definitely suggest you get a hardtail bike. Cheap + full suspension usually = crap, unless you get a good deal on something used.

Phillip,
If you haven't found anything locally, check out http://ibexbikes.com/Stacks/Series_Alpine.html
I have been reading reviews of them on some of the message boards, and I've heard nothing but good things about them.
