I have a separate "car fund"...the only money I can spend on the car is money that is made off of original money....I started with $1800 and now have 6 times that...I have made the money make money for me...I hold the money...really good deals come around every-now-and-then(more often if your looking for them), for instance if someone is selling something for $4000 and its real value is $8000, if you have the $4000 to buy it and re-sell it...you made $4000 b/c you have the money to spend(invest).... I then take that $4000 and put a portion of it into my "car fund"....Unfortunatley people have bad fortune and get themselves into situations they cannot afford(THAT DAMN CREDIT CARD USUALLY) ...stay away from the credit card....now, I have them and buy my parts with them, but I pay it off every month with "car fund" money...

Also, any money that is made on the side or extra from my original pay, goes into the "car fund"

If you know how to do IT work, make that work for you...I dont understand computers now-a-days...I grew up with "C:/dir" someone needs help, use what you got for knowledge to make money....GOOD LUCK....

1. debt, it's the american way.
2. loans (proud to say i've never owned a car with a BB value less than 3k)
3. going without things. hell i gave up going to strip clubs.
4. drink every other weekend, not every weekend.
5. don't throw money away on poor decisions.
6. avoid retail prices at all costs...

HEY! I4Stang...dude I'm a high schooler with a bone stock Jetta. I pay for my own food most of the time, but otherwise I don't pay for anything on my car...hence why it is bone stock. The 'rents don't exactly like the fact I try to work on my car at all...even though i know the mechanics of my car pretty well (thank you haynes manual) they refuse to pay for anything thats not necessary on my car...plus the reason they pay my insurance is coz i dun have a job (times are tough, I'm sure you know something about that...who doesn't), and i'm under my parents names...it used to be they didn't have to pay for me on insurance until i tapped a cocky guy from behind and scuffed his bumper (he got a new one out of the deal) so my insurance went up mad high. So i'm not one of the lucky ones who gets to do mods unless i do them myself with my own green.

A lot of interesting answers to my question. I do in fact have a good job for IT -- I'm a systems engineer with 7 years experience, as well as a solid J2EE programming background. Ironic -- i work for Northrop Grumman as well in Mclean VA.

I have heavily considered the second job to support my social life pretty much - but then wonder when exactly i'd have time for that social life. It must be manageable. I realize my budgeting skills are very poor.. i just blew 75 bucks out on a strip club with friends the other night. Another thing i noticed different from many was i'm drivin a new car vs. used. The royalty fees with a new car (granted i haggled my ass off and got under BB for it) are killer. But i'm sure there are other folks here with same situation or newer/more expensive cars.

I do wonder what woulda happened had i got into the car scene when i was younger and had more money (due to fewer expenses)....

My job helps me get my stuff. I'm in the IT field as well working on Langley AFB. Each check I just buy one thing at a time.

I work at a warehouse pulling 40-80 hours a week and come home weekly with no less than 800-1200.00 payday. I put 90.00 to my car insurance, probly spend 200.00 on bills, and 200.00 on food for me and my wife and kids, the rest gets spent right on the car. Plus being the military brat that I was ( im now 22 ) but, seeing that my old man was in the military I was able to open a account with navyfederal. Now what does my bank account have to do with this convo seeing I already spend 3/4's my check on car parts. I have 8000.00 in loans from the bank instant approval surprisingly with NO CREDIT...That was the major source of income and ivestment that went to my car, I only owe 2000.00 left back.
