What car should I get
STis are very responsive to modifications...especially with tuning.
The Evos can be reliable, but buying a used one can be tricky. You need to check everything on them. You don't want one that was improperly abused. Does that make sense?
Also, the 6 speed in the MR isn't that great. Evo owners have been swaping out the 6 speed for the 5 speed. The sad/disappointing part is that the 6 speed was supposed to be the saving grace.

If I get an STi it would be '05 or '06
If I get an evo, I decided not to go for the MR... rather save some money and grab an RS since I love how they look wingless. Do they have any problems that pop up for most people? The only thing I've seen is some problems with the transfer case on 03/04's, but havn't found any info on expected problems on 06's

Evo RS has no radio or power anything. I can't remember, but I think A/C may have been optional.
STI will have better sound(exhaust note), a better tranny, they both have pretty good engines, but Subaru is known for going 300,000 mi. Mitsubishi is not. You will have alot of reliable power with the STI too, I hear alot of bad things about longevity in the EVO. STI is also faster, EVO handles a tiny bit better, but I don't think you'll ever push either car so far to the limits that you'll ever notice. Evo interior is shit too, not that the STI is great, but I like it better then the cheap shitty materials and looks of the EVO
For me it was a STI, EVO, or 350z. I endedup picking another Legacy GT instead, but if I almost bought a STI over those other 2.
STi...better interior than the evo, better sounding IMO (especially stock for stock), and as far as performance...you said you dont race so you probably wont tell any differance between the 2. Not to metion, STI > EVO in looks, but what can i say, im biased, lol.
NO, they are not just quick from a launch, test drive one and let us no what you think.
