horsepower wars
So SCCA's Touring II class is unfair? As is SCCA's autocross series? I guess JGTC would be a better comparison right, where they DETUNED A STOCK VIPER AND PUT IT INTO A LOWER CLASS so it wouldnt destroy the competition in the higher GT class?

How is a basic inline 4 or 6 cylinder, with the same 60 year old overhead cam technology, any better than a 8 year old v8 motor that was redesigned for the ground up?
There's a reason why American manufacturers can put a 500hp motor in their cars, its simply easier to achieve the HP numbers with the bigger motor. Hence, we get the old tried and true saying:
there's no replacement for displacement

1999 Cobra 4.6l V8 = 320 hp
While I do agree that greater displacement allows for a larger potential, Americans do not have the playing filed locked by any means. I4's and I6's developed by international companies are not using all of the same ideas as they had previously, they're merely expanding upon and improving upon existing technology.

why not do that same comparison to an 04 e46 and an 04 cobra? not even considering the fact that a new cobra costs a little less than half of what an M3 costs off the lot.
or maybe an 05 z06 vs 05 m3? nearly the same price range.
yep.
True, the M3 produces more power, but its efficiency is lacking with 16/24 mpg, where the ford gets 18/25.
And we can do comparisons all day
2001 Chevy z06 5.7l v8 = 385hp 19/28mpg
2001 E46 M3 3.2l I6 = 333hp 16/24mpg
The larger motor has a TON more potential, and gets better gas mileage, as well as having more power in stock form. And if you think the LS1 isnt a technologically advanced motor just because it uses pushrod technology, then you are ignorant. Its not your fathers smallblock chevy, its completely different.
Oh, and in 2003, they gave the same motor 405hp, and upped the gas mileage to 19/28.

also the europeans have been pumping out great cars every year with incredible technology and high end parts. we're talking about japanese cars.

As I said before, I was just trying to stir shit up. I <3 the LS1, it probably gives about the best bang for your buck of any recent motor. I think the z06 got bumped up to 405 hp in 2002 though... My friend has one, and I'm pretty sure its got the 405hp badge on the side of it.
