If gas wasn't so expensive I would honestly say if you only have 1-4k to play with to get a truck. Once you own one you won't want to live without one.

I'm a BMW guy so I'm going to have to agree with the others and say e30. You can drive them well into the 200k range, great on gas, not overly powerful/fast but very peppy and fun to drive, pre facelifted early models are tanks and unlike some newer BMWs they are easy to work on.

I've found they are no more expensive than any other car if you are doing the work yourself and buying parts online. Dealership will screw you, yes.

Pretty much any Honda/Acura are good
Check insurance first, big difference in different models.
For instance my 4 door Integra GSR same premium as an Accord but the 2 door is much more.
