posting too see what peoples opinions are for this venture....

im going to start doing some composite fab... mainly interior pieces like pillars, headliners, roof caps, and rear quarters and door skins.... these parts will be direct bond on replacements.... i.e. reskining doors and cutting out sheetmetal rear quarters and bonding in the carbon ones...

target price is 750- 900 for complete rear quarters..... roughly 1200 - 1500 installed and painted.

i would like to start with an s15 rear quarter set and would need a car to model from. please give me some ideas

id like to start small with a mid price range sports car that has a high tuner cutomer base. since these products are not on the market yet i feel they would be the highest profit margin and create a demand for the parts.

please chime in with other ideas youd like to see. i also was thinkin carbon fiber trunk pans as well as carbon fiber floor pans..... i want functionality and actual weight savings ideas.

You should be looking at dry cf if you actually want it to be practical.

didnt know there was such a thing...... my fabric will be laid dry into mold and be set for a structural orientation. 45 degree with a directional weave.

im assuming your talking about a pre impregnated resin system....

i will be doing vacuum infusion instead with a infared cure system... its the most practical way. it is better than wet lay up and achieves the right resin to filament matrix.

also will be using epoxy and not poly resin fyi

have an autoclave lying around? Cause if you do we might have to talk a bit.

Vac bagging is obviously not the most efficient but the start-up costs of prepreg sure outweigh the weight savings (cute pun?)

Good luck getting started Dallas

edit - you got the reply i'm all late and shit. anyway gl - it's good fun

honestly vacuum bag is more expensive like you said.... i will be using perforated release film with breather cloth to get the it as close to an autoclaved part.... if we can get together i actually have contact that rent autoclave time.

sure, the cost are high, but the parts he is talking about making aren't just for cosmetics. I know if I look for a hood for my car, chances are its going to weigh more than stock. The only people that would want a carbon fiber trunk pan are going to want it to be dry.
