Tapping sound
Ok here is my problem i traded my car for a Lsvtec coupe. Love the car. But after driving it, it spun a rod bearing not 2 bad but it did. i caught it fast so it didnt dmg the crank. Now i changed the oil like ur supposed to cause the metal in the oil pan from the bearing.(5w30) and now its tapping sounds like its comming from the head not 2 sure though. was thinking valve tap. Ok so now symptoms. when i start it cold start it makes a fast tapping sound then stops. When i drive it it does the same sound at higher rpms or underload i can say but its not loud. I thought a valve tap is at idle also so thats why im counfused. the motor is a b18a1 and the head is gsr.

Re: Tapping sound
Wouldnt lifters make a tapping sound 24/7? it does it for a split second when i cold start it after that sounds gone. And does it when i drive and i hit the gas, when i let off the gas it stops.

Re: Tapping sound
I had the same problem. I bought a ls vtec motor off of here dropped it in and went to knocking. come to find out the bearings were to small so I changed them and changed the oil every other day. Still had the tapping so I adjusted the valves and that didn't work. The last thing I did was retard the time and that is what worked for me. My ls vtec use to do it at start up and start tapping around 3500.

Re: Tapping sound
I mean, unless I'm mis-reading something in his headache of a statement.
I've killed many motors in my day, hell my last D15 died just like that.
Knocked at cold start, then stopped, quiet as a mouse at idle, I could drive it and short shift around 3K rpms, right when it would start to knock.
Yet, say in my old Eclipse, 420A, it spun a bearing at cruising speed and knocked its ass off constantly.
It's all about the bearings themselves, and most Honda's aren't rebuilt with OEM bearings...
