Default Exhaust on Automatics?

Can exhausts sound good on automatic cars? I've heard they drone a lot and I don't want it to sound shitty but I'd really like to mod my cars exhaust system.

Well if you say it doesn't depend on the tranny how about on a 98' Eclipse GS. Only thing done to it is ebay ram air.
