thermostat?

my engine temp gauge will start to read hot to middle temp back and forth once my engine is warmed up. is this a thermostat problem or is like a bad ground or something related to the gauge its self? any info would be nice?

umm what car mite you be driving...

a 1941 ford, or a 2005 honda civic?
