Shocks question
I'm planning on getting Tein H-tech springs which are about a 1.5 inch drop. ( i know i would get coilovers but just dont have the money ). I've been searching this afternoon but haven't been able to find any answer so maybe you guys could help. I was wondering how long it generally takes for your shocks to blow after installing springs, and does the length you've owned your car play a big role? btw i have approximatly 50,000 miles on my car.
typically what causes the shocks to wear out is that the new springs are shorter (making the car lower) but the shock rod stays the same length. The problem comes when you go over dips in the road or something like that and cause the piston inside the shock to hit the foot valve at the bottom of the shock, breaking it and causing the shock to no longer function correctly. So if the springs don't lower the car to the point that you bottom out the suspension you should be somewhat ok. Also keep in mind that factory shocks aren't ment to handle the stiffer aftermarket springs so the also causing them to fail sooner.
Hope that helps some

Considering your shocks only have 50K miles they're probably in good shape. You could probably go for awhile without shocks. A 1.5" drop is not so low that you will be bottoming out all the time. Granted the ride will be a tad bit more bumpy.
I say you put the springs on and when you have more money upgrade the shocks if they start going bad. Unless you autoX or roadrace I would recommend just waiting to do both at the same time.
