i towed my 89 from MD to va beach with the rw on the ground. but i was planning to junk the tranny

just disconnect the driveshaft at the differential and zip tie it up. It wont hurt anything right away if you dont, but it has the capability of hurting.

Excerpt from PENSKE Tow Dolly Instructions....

Disconnect the drive shaft on the towed vehicle if rear-wheel or four-wheel drive. ..... Towing above vehicle without disconnecting drive shaft will damage towed vehicle's transmission even if transmission is placed in neutral.

Exactly how is the tranny spinning in neutral going to "burn" it up?

i used to work at Ryder....you can either disconnect the driveshaft, put the car in neutral, or back the car in the dolly but you need to lock the steering wheel straight...it is recommended to disconnect the driveshaft...if you put the car in neutral, the car can log miles as you drive it because the speed sensor may be in the differental...if you back in your car, you may not have the wheels straight and your tires will feel it...HTH
