Default Dual Purpose bike?

Hey guys, looking at Dual Purpose bikes.... Right now, I'm leaning towards the Kawasaki KLR650, but I wanted to get some opinions....

what % road and off-road will you be doing? drz400s if the emphasis is on dirt, xr650l if its in the middle and klr650 its more on the road side of things.

KLR'S are HEAVY!!

if you really want a good compromise between on and offroad, and you think you really have to have a 650, go with an XR650L. i used to have one, i loved it. much better bike than the KLR.

That doesn't make any sense.... The KLR has a dry weight of less than 10 pounds more than the XR650... I'm guessing the difference is in the gas tank. The XR only have a 2.8 gallon tank. The KLR has a 6 gallon tank... Sounds like teh XR would really limit my range....

ok, well i honestly don't know the dry weight of the two, but i can say from experience, the klr FEELS alot heavier than the xr. thats all fine and good if you don't really plan on doing the dirt thing much. the klr carries it's weight a lil higher, with makes it a bit less nimble than the xr.
that combined with the klr's bulk make it a less effective dirt tool.

this is all just my opinion though, go with what suits you best. i've owned a 650l, and ridden a bunch of klr's. i just feel the xr to be a better all round bike.

as far as range goes, niether of them are super comfy, so by the time you ran out of gas on the xr, you'd probably be wanting to rest your butt a lil bit anyway.

a corbin seat goes a long way on either of them though.

SM = Supermotard = A helluva a lot of fun!

Bikes to consider would be the Husky 450SMR, KTM 450SMR or 950, and 'Zuk DRZ's or any 450 four stroke MX bike converted for street trim (lights, plate holder). I want one but just don't have room in the garage for another bike but they are a fuckin blast.
