I would prefer a Honda CBR or Kawasaki Ninja, some thing that looks sporty.
I don't really want a beginners bike but not a Hayabusa.
Is this your first bike? What's your riding experience like? Have you taken the MSF course?

If this is your first bike and you don't have much, if any experience, I'd put between $2000 and $2500 towards a bike and the extra $1000-$500 down for some decent gear. Also, I'd recommend taking the MSF course before you purchase anything to ensure this is something you really want to do. If it is something you want to get into after the MSF, look for a Kawasaki Ninja 500, Suzuki GS500, or possibly a Suzuki SV650S.

If you have experience, I'd recommend going with an older Kawasaki 636, CBR F3, or CBR F4. There are deals to be had on these bikes, you just have to be patient in your search efforts. Also, don't be afraid to drive a while to get a deal. Skr00z and I went on a 6 hour trip one way to pick up an F4, but it was well worth the trip.

I personally recommend getting a 500cc bike as your first bike, so a gs500 or a ex500 (ninja500). My reasons for this is that these smaller bikes have a much gentler power band across the entire range of rpm's and are not very jerky. You can learn to enter and exit corners more skillfully I believe on these bikes then getting on a 600 and throwing it around. Also, I do not want to advocate being unsafe and dangerous but I have own a ex500 and riding with more powerful bikes and keeping up with them has definitely improved my skill as a rider. Since I am usually near the back of the pack I can also watch and learn from more experienced riders. At the speeds you should be traveling you really should have no problem keeping up with the bigger bikes, I have taken the 500 to the top of its speedometer on 464. The biggest thing though is to buy what is going to make you happy in the long run, if you feel that you will get bored of a 500 too quickly and it is not worth the investment then go ahead and get a 600 or a 750, just respect the bike. If you respect the bike, and the rules of the road you should be just fine. Remember biking is fun, keep it that way.

Nope. The bike supposedly wasn't running, but when we got down there and got it fired up, Skr00z discovered it was a soft battery and not a bad stator or bad wiring harness like the owner thought. Plus, it was getting close to dark and I counted several fresh deer carcasses on the side of the road.

The only experience I have on a motorcycle is on one of those gas powered pocket bike. I would just ride that around but the ladies aren't digging it.
Have you taken the MSF course? No I haven't taken this course is it a training class so you can get you Motorcycles license?
I spent some time looking at the different years and models and I like these.
1995 SUZUKI GSX-R750
1998 KAWASAKI ZX750 NINJA
2000 YAMAHA R6
Honda cbr
Now I just need to find one!

In essence, yes. It will help you get your Class M on your license if you pass the course. The course usually runs $90 and fills up relatively fast. Check MSF for various information with regard to the course. Also, check Local Courses for a course near you. It helped me out a lot and saves you from having to take the ridden exam at the DMV. Let me also suggest studying the Virginia DMV Motorcycle Operator Manual and getting your Motorcycle Learner's Permit.

Also, you may have set your sights a bit high especially with this being your first motorcycle. You had to learn to crawl before you ran. In this case, running can be deadly...
