Lightbulb The Official VaDriven $50 Paint Job Thread

For those of you that havent been following the monstrocity that was my teg project, check it out... https://www.vadriven.com/forums/showthread.php?t=170135

and so you dont think im completely nuts and pulling something out of my ass... here's the post that started it all
http://board.moparts.org/ubbthreads/...0&fpart=2&vc=1

Moving right along, theres about a million websites out there now that have threads about this paint job but hey, this is the one im stuck on so i plan to document my journey here....

the materials for my experiment contain the following:\

3QT Rustoleum Protective Enamel Navy Blue
1 Gallon of Mineral spirits
1 Gallon of Acetone
4 4 inch High Density Foam rollers (so far)
1 Bag of tac cloth...
a butt ton of sand paper

since my car was in such bad shape, i had to strip it down to bare metal. the first piece im testing on is my fender. the pattern is to prep the car as you would for any other paint job, then lay 2 coats, then wet sand. here's how mine looks after the first 2 coats. no wetsand yet (thats going to be done in the AM.

6/6
because of my inability to find a local welder that makes house calls, my project is severely behind schedule. at any rate im pressing on...

as i wait, i find myself in a unique situation as i have several body parts at different stages of the process.

ive removes and prepped all the parts that i could. the front bumper has received all 3 coats and is ready for buffing (i think)... havent gotten the wetsanding thing totally figured out. (any tips would be much appreciated!

the hood is in the middle stage. needs one more coat and significant wetsanding still (i had paint peel and spider webbing that set me back big time)

this is the rear hatch after the first coat.

it seems that the roll works a lot better especially on the first coats by comparison to spraying. you do have to wait longer though (3-4 hours) before you can apply the second of the 2 coat process if you want the second coat to go on without streaking, waves etc.

and i continue on...

I did my entire old car this way:

However, I spent just over 70 dollars for this PJ a few weeks ago:

If you have access to a real gun/compressor you can do a real PJ for cheap.

if i had a gun, id be on it.... but for 50 bucks for the gun, and 150 at least for a decent compressor, i just cant do it... if i had Driven 2 years ago, that would be a different story, unfortunately, right now, im stuck.

a little set back... BE ADVISED... foam rollers and sponge rollers are NOT the same. i got my original rollers from a paint store but ran out so i went to walmart hoping they would have some. i didnt see foam, but the sponge rollers had the same feel to them so i thought it was just a different name... damn did i feel like an ass when i started rolling and the bubbles started appearing.... lss, i have to sand off an entire coat because i was too dumb to realize the difference between foam and sponge.... oh well.. more as soon as i get back up to speed...

That sucks, but hey live and learn. Thanks for the update and info. I'm interested in seeing how the full thing turns out!
