Default Dakar 2008 Cancelled

Apparently the French are afraid of the terrorists so they can be coerced into doing anything the terrorists want.

http://www.autoblog.com/2008/01/04/d...lly-cancelled/

After different exchanges with the French government - in particular the Ministry for Foreign Affairs - , and based on their firm recommendations, the organisers of the Dakar have taken the decision to cancel the 2008 edition of the rally, scheduled from the 5th to the 20th of January between Lisbon and Senegal's capital.

Based on the current international political tension and the murder of four French tourists last 28th of December linked to a branch of Al-Qaeda in Islamic Maghreb, but also and mainly the direct threats launched directly against the race by terrorist organisations, no other decision but the cancellation of the sporting event could be taken by A.S.O.

A.S.O.'s first responsibility is to guarantee the safety of all: that of the populations in the countries visited, of the amateur and professional competitors, of the technical assistance personnel, of the journalists, partners and rally collaborators. A.S.O. therefore reaffirms that the choice of security is not, has never been and will never be a subject of compromise at the heart of the Dakar rally.

A.S.O. condemns the terrorist menace that annihilates a year of hard work, engagement and passion for all the participants and the different actors of the world's biggest off-road rally. Aware of the huge frustration, especially in Portugal, Morocco, Mauritania and Senegal, and beyond the general disappointment and the huge economical consequences in terms of direct and indirect repercussions for the countries visited, A.S.O. will continue to defend the major values of great sporting events and will carry on its engagement for a durable development through the Actions Dakar, started 5 years ago in sub-Saharan Africa with SOS Sahel International.

The Dakar is a symbol and nothing can destroy symbols. The cancellation of the 2008 edition does not endanger the future of the Dakar. To offer, for 2009 a new adventure to all the off-road rally passionate is a challenge that A.S.O. will take on in the months to come, faithful to its engagement and its passion for sports.
Easy solution, counter terrorism "Anyone in this rally gets kidnapped or murdered by you, we nuke you. . ." And I liked watching them beat the living piss out of those trucks

Were as I agree this sucks, you can't blame the French for the actions they took. If this article is correct and they were pretty much told by the terrorist themselves that if the race was held they would preform some kind of terrorist act aka blow something up, kidnap someone, etc. they really had no choice. I highly doubt any government in the world thinks the the Dakar Rally is imporant enough to deploy the kind of counter terrorist measures to assure the safety of everyone involved in this event. Remember most of this race takes place out in the desert away from the public eye. You would almost have to have some form of security travel along with each indivdual race car and motorcycle.

Do you realize how many threats a day we get in this country?? If we stopped everytime there was a threat this country would come to a halt.

Pussies!

And your point? there is a lot of threats we cannot protect against here, but that doesn't stop us.

You realize changing our lives and scaring us is what the terrorist want... We don't even know if its a fact that they would be able to pull off an attack.

It's kinda beyond a threat when four French tourists were killed by 'terrorists' last week for simply being French. Shit, I wouldn't want to race in it anyways with that kind of crap going on around me. It's just a game, nothing worth dying over.

Exactly, does it suck? Yes. Should we change everything about our lives because of threats from terrorist? No, but in this case it just dosent make sense to risk it. The amount of money and planning it would take to provide even minimual protection for the event makes it just not worth it. I'm all for going on about our lives and ignoring threats but theres a point were it just becomes stupid.
