Default Pontiac 400ci Engine - Any reliable rebuild shops?

It's got 137,000 origional miles, runs great and strong, but I figure it could use a rebuild more than anything.

1) How much does this generally cost?
2) Any good shops that are reliable enough to handle this huge task?

I'd be afraid that I'd end up F'ing it up, or I'd feel bad that the person that would be doing 90% of the work and telling me what to do would feel like I'm using them... you can only press southern hospitality so much, y'know.

I would get in contact with performance unlimited they are really good with domestic engines and domestic cars, another gooed machine shop is abacus racing they are probably the most diverse and efficient at what they do but they do cost a pretty penny, however performance unlimited has yet to screw anything up, and they can advise you what size bearings to buy and what size pistons and rings, they will tell you everything you want, and if you do it yourself you better be prepared to do it all nothing half-assed and I mean valve train as well as all short block work and mic'ing and getting everything cleaned and checked for what the specs are

do that shit right the first time and it'll last you

Performance Unlimited
(757)587-8777

Abacus Racing
(757)363-8878

hope all of this helps

I'd be scared of screwing it up too but it's not really that hard. If you feel so bad about it get good directions or just get a friend that's done it before to help you.

What year is the motor?? I have a 1979 Formula with a 403 that will need rebuilding here soon.. It should be easy since there isnt a whole lot to the motor.. The only part that is hard is setting the tq on the rod bolts, and remembering were all the bolts go.. If you get the tq specs then you should be fine..
