+1 Pattaya on 17 is good, very nice ambience in the evening as well.
There is also a good hole in the wall place at Mercury Blvd and King St, can't think of the name but they have good Masaman Curry.
And if you want good authentic Thai food and aren't worrying about impressing the girlfriend but just want some damn good Thai, go to Thai Orchid on Ft Eustis near the barracks. My mom is good friends with the original owner and current owners (I'm Thai).

Good thing you let him know 7 years later! Hopefully he actually took his lady somewhere and didn't wait all this time for your recommendation.
