I do hope they find these guys jobs.
NEWPORT NEWS (AP) -- With two months left on their current contract, some 8,000 shipbuilders at the Newport News shipyard are looking for a new contract.
United Steelworkers Local 8888 said it will begin contract negotiations on Wednesday with the Northrop Grumman shipyard on a new collective bargaining agreement.
The local has gone to the airwaves to raise awareness about the negotiations and what it says is the "sharp economic pinch" felt by workers.
The existing contract expires on Oct. 26.
The shipyard is one of the biggest employers in Hampton Roads. It is the Navy's only builder of nuclear-powered aircraft carriers.
The shipyard also has a hand in the building of fast-attack submarines.

The problem with newport news isn't the workers, it's management and the corporate culture that prioritizes profit over quality. It just KILLS morale to see a mistake, know it's a mistake, yet be forced to do it wrong just so you can get paid to do it wrong 2 more times (making profit every time, mind you, cost-plus!) and turn broken shit over to the navy, so they can pay someone to do it again to fix it. It's fucked up that newport news gets paid MORE to do it wrong 3 times than to it right once, but that's the way it works.

Between the the lazy guys that aren't doing anything and the lack of skilled hard working guys, it's a wonder we get anything done at all. What's F-ed up is the clean up guy asleep in a space when he is supposed to be cleaning gets paid as much as the mechanic installing arresting gear. Yay for unions.
