Default Need your opinions regarding whether to swap or not.

Hey everyone, right now I've got my 87 celica GTS, and I love the little car for what it is. Anyways, it was swapped with a 3SGE after the previous one shot a rod and blew the headgasket, but right now I am thinking about another swap.

Now my 3SGE is 2 liters, but the swap I'm thinking about is the 4AGZE which is 1.6 liters, but comes with a supercharger, forged pistons, oil jets, and an 8:8:1 compression for 1100 dollars. It comes with the fully assembled engine (including harnesses), the tranny, and the intercooler.

Do you think the loss in engine displacement is worth it?

1st gen MR2 engine, right?
If you're going to go with a turbo setup, the 4AGZE is already built for a bit more abuse because it's a factory supercharged setup. I'd say keep the supercharger and add a turbo to it, the torque curve will be nice and wide. I think that engine is only rated at 145 or 165 HP, year dependent, but it has the strength to make a lot more..

Thanks for the replies, the only thing that I'm thinking about is that I could spend more on the 3sge and get more power out of it, but I'm weary of engines that weren't built for boost.

4AGZE is an awesome engine, but it already has a 3SGE in there to start with, why not keep it that way? A 3SGTE swap would be relatively easy if you can find the harness from an ST165 it should be (in theory) plug and play just use your transmission. Same with a later 3SGE Beams motor, except the harness would have to be somewhat modified to fit your chassis.

The 3SGTE would have the highest potential for power down the road but is a bit more maintenance intensive.

The 3SGE Beams would be great because it's N/A so low maintenance costs and it makes 200hp out of the box.

Just my input.

The only thing worrying me is whether or not the mounting has changed over the years. Also, from what I've read, the 3SGTE isn't compatible with any FWD trannys that toyota made. ]

I'm new to toyotas so I'm still reading.

It does bolt to the FWD transmission it's just that it's not very strong. The added power could likely tear it to pieces and break it very easily. http://www.toyotacelicaonline.com/celica1/3sgteswap.htm The 1MZ 3.0L V6 5spd transmission bolts on, but you'd need the associated axles as well and maybe even have to switch spindles to make it work, I'm not too sure there.

Thanks for the help. I'm about to say screw it and get a 240 for the price it would cost me to do what I want to the celica. I have a new love for 240s after seeing a buddy with one that has an RB20 in it.

I'll probably just try and rebuild the 3SGE from the ground up so I can boost it. I know that the v6 tranny you're talking about though is supposedly extremely hard to find.
