quiet exhaust
Im new to the board, but read through a guys' post about exhaust tickets and such. What can you do?
There's PLENTY of things you can do!! You own your car, nobody should be able to tell you want you can and cant do to it. We all know the law pretty much writes its own rules, so we have to get outside the rules and outside the obvious. Cops dont know what comes on your car and what does not-especially today where lots of cars have large exhaust tips and throatier sounds. There's too much out there to know it all, unless they happen to be a car guy themselves, and in that case likely to be easy on you unless they just hate whatever you drive or how you've modded it.
options:
1. paint the super polished stainless muffler BLACK!
2. cut off the stupid big exhaust tip and weld on a 3" or so.
3. have an additional resonator/muffler welded inline w/ the rest of the exhaust, if its a straight design it will quiet the exhaust more without adding sifnificant restriction.
4. keep your eyes open for piggys and dont drive WOT past them! I know there are lots of unmarked cars though.
5. if you're looking to replace your stock or current exhaust, consider a custom system using several straight through mufflers/resonators, 2 large or 3smaller at least (the larger volume inside the muffler and the more mufflers the quieter) and mandrel bends that can be cut for use with your car's layout. I've referred many people to PIPER MOTORSPORTS for custom fully stainless mandrel bent exhausts and they're usually CHEAPER and much nicer than something you can buy, but more importantly- quiet, with the exact tip/muffler look YOU want. I've also had 3 cheap custom exhausts made poorly, so just go to a good place and be done with it.
I like magnaflow mufflers best, and vibrant is ok too.
I've owned various LOUD cars for over 10 years. I've NEVER had an exhaust ticket (knock on wood) and i think its b/c all my cars' exhaust simply LOOK SUBTLE and i look around before i mash the throttle.
I have heard 20 "rules" about exhaust from 20 cops. I've heard more than once "you can only use a OEM exhaust", i've responded "so if my exhaust gets a hole from rust, i cant buy a oem replacement exhaust from the local auto parts store"? That particular cop had no answer for me. Of course you can put whatever exhaust on your car, they dont know what the car is supposed to have, and wont see it unless they arent attracted to something about it.
