welding or brazing Qs
just a quick question really, I need to weld o2 bungs in a header and was wondering if I should weld with acetylene and weld rods, or brazing rods?
I was thinking that if I brazed it that it may crack from the header heating and cooling so much, but I think brazing would be easier so I don't burn a hole in the header.
anyone have an opinion?

Re: welding or brazing Qs
I've got a gas less mig welder but it just plain out right sucks ass because well... its gas less. very very messy. so I wanted to buy a oxyacetylene welder anyways for small jobs and figured i could do this with it when I get it.

Do you have Fluxcore wire? You can weld just as well with fluxcore.Oxyacetylene will work,I would play around with another piece of metal first, just to make sure you don't burn through.

I plan on practicing a bit before I try, but I do use flux core wire but the amount of slag is just rediculous. Doesn't oa welding not produce slag? This is the main reason I wana try it

fluxcore will work fine. I've been welding O2 bungs with it for years with no issues. I even do downpipes with it. The splatter can be minimized through time. If you are welding thick pieces such as O2 bungs, you can almost avoid the splatter.

Re: welding or brazing Qs
give it to me. i have done some in the past. if its a cast steel peice the best way to do it is preheat to around 600 degrees, tig it, and let it slowly cool under a heat blanket. that will help prevent any cracking. mig welding it especially with a small 110 volt machine will not get the proper penetration, if any. a bigger 220 volt, like 150-250 amp machine would be better. it would only be a temporary fix though. if its a bent tubing header then its easier as far as penetration and resistance of cracking. mig may do it, but tig will be ideal. and again letting it cool slowly will be better. let me know if your interested in having me do it for you.

well its a ss header. so what you guys are saying is that the oxy acetylene welding would not work? I know you say mig would but I would also just like to get practice with different types of welding and I have done mig before.

o stainless. well it wouldnt be much different from steel. well you must use the proper wire too. not just carbon steel wire. well, it would work, but wouldnt hold the same.
