VIRGINIA BEACH
Three Green Run High School seniors were killed today in a crash on Salem Road in Virginia Beach, police said.
The teens were identified Friday night as Matthew Kirkbride, 18, of the 3700 block of Forrester Lane, the driver; Joseph Jenkins, 17, of the 4600 block of Stone Bridge Lane, a front-seat passenger, and 17-year-old Adam Ross Sherman, of the 900 block of Ridgeway Court, who was in the back seat.
According to police, the teens attended Green Run High School in the mornings and the Virginia Beach Technical and Career Education Center on North Landing Road in the afternoons. They had just left the education center when the accident happened, according to police.
The two-vehicle crash was reported at 1:56 p.m. in the 2700 block of Salem Road, said Officer Adam Bernstein, a police spokesman.
Bernstein said all three were wearing seatbelts, and speed was a factor in the crash.
The teens were in a Volkswagen that collided with a minivan, he said. The Volkswagen was going too fast around a corner and went sideways, Bernstein said.
The driver of the minivan was taken to a hospital with injuries that were not considered life-threatening, Bernstein said.
The crash happened in front of Dennis Chandler’s house on Salem Road.
“It sounded like a huge explosion,” Chandler said.
Chandler said he talked to the driver of the van, who told him two cars came around a curve very fast, and that he could not avoid the second car. The driver of the van was bleeding from his head, Chandler said.
“This is not the first accident here,” Chandler said. “The cars come flying around the curve.”
Salem Road was closed from North Landing Road to Landstown Road.
Police are on the scene investigating.
