Default For those looking for an APBT or AST. "Pit" "Staff"

Before responding to a for sale thread go onling or to your local shelters and see what they have available. I see many members on here who are interested in the dogs that do not know much about the breed. Please pm me for info or help. I have been with this breed for awhile now. I can help steer you in the right way. I am sure there are others here as well that know quit a bit as well. BlackEX seems like he knows a bit as well.

I can point you in the right direction to good bred dogs at kennels if that is what you are looking for, or if you simply want to rescue/adopt I can try to be of some assistance.

I can also refer you to books and sites that have a great wealth of info.

+ Rep.

I first became interested in the breed when me and my wife were dating several years ago. She used to volunteer at the SPCA on Saturdays. When I would stop by to see her or go out to lunch with her I noticed that the place was always full of pitbulls. They used to get an SPCA news letter where my wife was volunteering and I remember reading that one of the top SPCA officials estimated that there were currently more pitbulls in shelters and pounds than there were registered with the UKC and ADBA combined.

It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out why there were so many pits in the shelter when the classified section of the newspaper was always full of pitbull litters for sale.

Because I know someone will ask: I have one female pitbull that is spayed. I got her out of a shelter in Waco TX. She was in the shelter for over a year, probably due to the fact that she only has 3 legs and nobody seemed to want a 3 legged pit. (kinda makes it hard to look like a tough guy walking a 3 legged dog)

I bought my first APBT from a BYB a couple years ago before I had ever read up on reputable breeders. Before I acutally got my own I was around them with friends and family.

I immediately went online and starting gathering info and it went from there. My female is from Dallas where I used to live before enlisting. We rescued a male out in Williamsburg last year. Both are fixed. We have plans to buy a few acres so that we can start a kennel back in the DFW area when my enlistment is up. There are several refuges we will be working with for adoptions and fosters.

I have noticed everyone has been buyin in to that super rare blue nose pit bs. They pay 500~1000 for pups when you can find some good ones at shelters. Some of them do have problems but there are good ones out there. A friend of mine just payed $1100 to get one from atl. His sister got one at the pound that looked better and behaved better.

Just something to think about

I am looking for one but my roomates being a bitch because hes afraid of them

You sir, are correct. I see nothing wrong with having a color preference for a dog, but saying that one color is rare or worth more money is just stupidity.

They are nice looking and all but the problem is too much backyard breeding. everyone thinks they can get rich off breeding pits. There is nothing wrong with breeding two good dogs to improve a bloodline but theres too many dogs being bred that shouldent be. When the dogs get big and scarry they just get rid of them. thats one of the main problems.

I got my first pit from Norfolk animal control over on military. they always have a few of them up there.he is a really good dog and I taught him Sit, shake, lay,roll-over, and beg in the first week. You can get some good dogs at shelters. my new puppy might as well be considered a rescue he probably would have died in the house I got him from. I highly recomend adopting. You can brose animal shelters for free at www.petfinder.com you can search by breed and all

Yes you can Slimb. Thanks for sharing. Craigslist also has some as well. Just be careful and smart. Rehoming fees shouldn't be over $100 NO MATTER WHAT. An adoption cost no more than $150, at least from what I have seen and dealt with. If the dog is fairly trained and house-broken and under 1.5 years go at look at the dog. Take your current pets with you, or have the owner bring the dog to you. Keep all animals on leashes or caged. Go from there.

Let them interact for an hour or so at minimum. Have an understanding that 48 hours or so the dog can be returned. A respectable person will honor this. Not all dogs are comfortable around eachother when you are not present. If you decide you want to keep them anyway, learn to "crate and rotate".
