300zx
Hey, I think I'm in the right area for this. I am confident that I can do all necessary work to the engine in this car, and I have all of the tools and setup to do so (excluding a full machine shop....). But what the real question is, what would you pay for a 1992 300zx NA that had the timing belt break and probably has bent valves/ needs a good engine rebuild. The asking price is $2000, I would be on that if it were 1200ish.
Another question for the 300zx fans, How likely would a valve job/ reworked head and new timing belt fix the issue with this vehicle? Or better question, could the lower end be damaged?

I have never owned or worked on a 300zx but I have seen and worked on several cars that broke a timing belt and cracked pistons when they collided with the valves. I think that would be wort case though. Won't really know until the motor is taken apart. Good Luck though.

Worst case, you're looking at a new engine. Whether the engine was damaged would depend on the RPM and engine load when the belt broke. If it was low load and low RPM, you may just need a new head or a head rework because you probably have bent valves at a minimum. If it's worse than that, you're looking at replacing the pistons and con rods. Usually the valves are the most fragile thing when a timing belt breaks, and the rest of the valvetrain often takes some damage also.
It's a gamble, you have to decide whether you're prepared to drop a different engine in it if you have to. You didn't do the damage, so you don't know what the conditions were when it happened, and you haven't actually seen the inside of the engine yet.

You are looking at a real live nightmare. Instead of tearing the engine apart in car and risk screwing something up you may as well get a used unit from Jhot for around 1200 with trans. I THINK they still have it. It will run you cheaper or same then time /parts you need to put in it.
If you decide to do a rebuild all i got to say is enjoy removing the exhaust manifolds and intake plenum Imagine yourself being the "receiver" in a relationship...that's how it will feel No joke.
O and no car is not worth 2k, its been for slae for months! Car seems fairly clean, offer him a grand see what happens.
