02 CIVIC LX overheat Problem
ok on the highway from va beach to richmond my friends's car got a small leak in the radiator and caused it to over heat into the red. she got it towed to a shop and they replaced the rad., thermostat, and did a flush and refill. on her way back from the shop here car over heated again in stop and go traffic on 64 so she pulled over and waited for it to cool down and traffic to clear then she brought it home to me ......
heres the weird part ...
i took a look at everything Hoses, fans, connectors for everything cooling wise....
everything checked out and fluid was still good and no sludge under oil cap.
so i took it for a drive and dogged the shit out of it to see if it over heats......
it doesnt!?
come to find out it only overheats when i turn the AC on ...
(fans are running when AC is on)
HELP!

Hmm, I dont know how the pulley setup on those are arranged, if the AC runs off the same belt as the water pump, you could be underdriving the water pump, causing an overheat. I was thinking air pocket before you said it only overheats with the AC.
Make sure that thats the only condition it overheats under.

you might want to tell your friend to consult her owner's manual. it clearly states that overheating can occur when ac is used excessively during relatively hot weather. the extra strain ac puts on the motor in addition to the weather can cause the motor to overheat. its common knowledge, but seriously, read the owner's manual. it's there for a reason
