I am putting up this thread for any police officers on the board. I got out of the Marines last year and have been working a pretty good office job up here in DC , the problem is I am going crazy, the civilian office life just isnt for me. I saw that local Hampton Roads Departments were hiring, specifically Norfolk and Virginia Beach. I am considering being a Beach Cop. So I have a lot of questions about what its like. So is there any local police officers here that can jump in this thread and answer some questions for me?

Whats the Job like?

Starting off how long is it until you can do other things like be bike cop, or SWAT team, or get out on the water?

How is the pay and benefits?

What should I expect from the entry process?

Will I be able to use my extensive experience in marksmanship instructing?

I am seriously mulling applying over, any information I can get would be great.

 

FYI it's Roads... and to be a beach cop you need to look good in shorts and enjoy riding around on a bike or horse harrasing kids in imports.

 

Yea I always get the rhodes-roads jacked up for some reason, thanks for the spot. I do like riding bikes and/ or harassing people so I guess thats a start

Virginia beach is gonna be real hard to get into. norfolk is way easier.

Thats what I thought, but a friend of mine who knows that I am bored to death just sent me an email saying they were taking people into the academy pretty easily at the moment. (not sure how accurate his info is). At this point Im looking at any job/ career that where I dont have to feel like Im stuck in Office Space.

 

Welcome to corporate America my friend! Sometimes I hate it... but hey it allows me to pursue my hobbies otuside of work.

 

my brother couldnt get into Va Beach so he applied to norfolk and within a week they were calling him. he of course recently graduated with his bachelors and currently working on his Masters in Criminal justice.

he wanted to get in to a Federal job but they said he needed police experience. So VABCHPD wasnt hiring so he went to Norfolk.

 

I dont know how somebody could do this every day for 20 years!
