For regular users the dimensions are limited to 468x60 while Patrons get 728x90.
If you upload a picture that is larger in either direction it will get scaled down to fit. For example if, as a regular user, you tried to use a 800x600 image it would be scaled to 80x60 to fit within the 60 limitation.
Your best bet to get a decent looking signature is to upload something that has a similar ratio to the allowed dimensions; basically long rectangles instead of squares.
