Default question on 4g63 lifter tick...

qwan's thread got me to thinking. someone said the ticking can cause the knock sensor to pull timing. if the lifters tick bad enough on a cold startup could it cause the motor to pull a huge amount of timing to make the car almost want to bog to a stall?

It is possible in my opinion, but it never gets cold enough here where I am to know. I don't think I want to find out the hard way tho.

Not sure on that one. The 6g72 has a lil bit of lifter tick also, but on a cold start the car idles ok.

Our cars don't play to much with the timing at idle. SO, I would have to day no.

I'm going to look through some data logs that I have and see. I believe the timing stays at base till the tps signal goes up.

when that happened to me my ECU was going bad! 4G63's are known for that.

well i was curious because sometimes when the car is real cold, after i back out of the driveway and start to pull away in first the car will bog and not want to pull at all untill ~3k, and then it'll act/drive normally. was wondering if maybe that was from lifter tick so i was curious to know if anyone else had a problem like that. the problem isnt at idle, just trying to pull away when the car has first been started.

Have you given the motor plenty of time to warm up? On cold days i usually give it a good 5-10 min. to warm up.

damn, you slacker. give it some time man
I won't drive off in a car thats ticking loud, mine used to tick a little at start up I refused to drive off no matter how busy i was until it stopped.

Give it at least a couple minutes.

Mine taps for a few seconds on occasion on cold mornings. What oil are you using. I basically played with different weights till I found one that ticked the least.
