Default Does anyone do compression testing?

I might be buying a used car and I want to get the motor compression tested to make sure its straight? Any shops do this and if so which ones?

I'm sure any shop could do it. It takes about 10 minutes(not including warm-up time).

you could compression test it yourself if you could get to the spark plugs. I think you have the wrong idea of what compression testing is

it takes about 10 minutes and basic hand tools to do a compression test.

go to advance and buy the compression tester, it's like $40 even better yet get a leak down test on the motor.

Do I go to a shop for the leak down test or just buy a tool for that, whats the difference between the two?

Compression test....you crank the motor with a pressure gauge in the spark plug hole.

Leakdown test....you pressurize the combustion with compressed air via the spark plug. You do this with all the valves closed. Measure how much pressure you loose after certain period of time.

If you don't know how to do it or what the factory spec is for the car. You are better off taking it to a shop.
