Default blow off valve question

a friend of mine wants to put a blow off valve on his 96 turbocharged volvo. will any bov work or does it have to be application specific? can you mount it anywhere on the intake tube (smic to tb) and does it have to be adjusted according to whatever boost he is running? suggestions on a good priced bov would help also. does it need to be welded directly onto the piping or does it bolt to a flange that needs to be welded on?

basically someone fill me in on wtf is going on here. i dont do turbochargers :[

depends on the boost level.. you want one that will handle the amount of boost he is running.. on most turbo cars really any BOV is fine, it's only when you start to make a lot of power and are flowing so much air that some BOVs can't blow off enough air where you need to start being picky. you can put it anywhere that's pressurized before the TB and yeah it bolts to a flange that needs to be welded on

Generally speaking, yes, any run-of-the-mill bov should work. I doubt he's running enough boost to make even the shitty ones leak. Anywhere after the turbo and before the TB is fine for a mounting spot. I doubt he has a flange on it already, so yes, it will have to be welded on in some way.

That's all I got.

werd

dont most turbo cars come with some sort of recirculation valves on them that work somewhat similar to a bov? if he already has one of those does it have to be removed before installing a bov? also whats the difference between venting the bov back into the intake and venting it atmospherically? does it matter if there is no MAF in place? if there is a maf, does the bov need to be positioned before the maf?

Well, if he just wants the sound he can get it by cutting one tube. You can cut the dump tube, car will lose vacuum and idle funny, but it gives you the sound.

if it uses MAF then putting it after the MAF may cause the car to act a little funny, not really sure how that particular car would react.. if it uses MAP then you can vent no prob.. if the car runs MAF and you want to do it the "correct" way then yeah you're supposed to recirculate it

You mean putting it before the MAF

You're supposed to recirculate it after the MAF. The MAF has already calculated the air that the BOV is releasing, if you do atmospheric vent or vent it before the MAF the car will run rich when the BOV releases.

If there's no MAF then you can do whatever you what since it either uses a MAP sensor or TPS to determine load.
