whats it doing, and why you want to rebuild it?
unless ya have done several....i would HIGHLY reccomend installing a reman unit....
and make sure your vac. pump and fipple switch are operational.
yes....there is a thing called a fipple switch...its on the inj. pump. basically a TPS for the transmission.

uh...get another unit. even if you go to rebuild that one, you are gonna be looking at a few hard parts (not the normal things replaced in a standard rebuild) if there is shavings...
and as heavy as that fucker is....do it once, do it right. its lighter then the allison in the duramax....but still about 350lbs.

Re: anyone know ford diesels and e40d trannys
ok with the help of someone that knows how to rebuild trannys
i have a rebuilt 2wd unit
and i looked at the diagrams thier are three parts that i could see diff.
between the trannys couldnt i just swap my output shaft in the back out
(because 4wd is shorter because of transfer case)
everything is identical according to the diagram except
outputshaft
reverse hub and clutch assembly
i think that was it

i think there are a few more differences, but i dont teardown many anymore. its not worth it (especially if i have to throw a warranty on it....)
the output shaft is attatched to the drive shell, IIRC, which will entail basically a full teardown. dont know about anything else....and some cases are different. i would check before doing it though, which is obvious, since you are asking about it
