cold start idle problem EMBARRASSING!
I have a 90 Integra LS with 190k miles on it, I have an intake header and exhaust. Im not sure why i mentioned that i just thought it might help. When I start my car after its been sitting cold, it will have a very high idle then after it settles down to about 1k rpm, it will drop and almost cut off, then jump back up as if i hit the gas, then drop back down to almost 0 rpm , then jump back up to about 1 or 1.5k rpm, and over and over again until it heats up. Please someone tell me what this problem is?! I have a very loud exhaust and for that to happen is very embarrassing. Lol its hard to look cool with a LOUD busted car.

Wiping the carbon build-up off the O2 sensor seemed to help my idle problem. Time will tell how long it lasts.

do a self-diagnostic on the car. i had the same problem with mine. it only gets worse. i have a 90 accord and it was the crank angle sensor( basically the distributor) so if you try what they told you and it doesn't work try the diag. if you want i can tell you where it is and what the codes are. think they are the same. pm me if you try the cleaning and it doesn't work.

sounds like you Idle Air Control (IAC) motor is bad. If you recently had someone clean your motor out with some kinda brake clean or carb cleaner chances are they fawked your IAC and fast idle valve up. The cleaning sol. eats the wax element away in the IAC and fast idle valve up and they are no longer good.

If it goes away once it's heated up it's more likely the FITV (fast idle thermal valve).
You can test the IACV by unplugging it from the back of the intake manifold.... I think the idle should drop/car die. if not then the iacv is bad...
if it does then move on to checking the FITV... remove the FITV and cover the top part with something that won't melt/leak and re-install... hope it works...
