anyone have a reccomendation on a head gasket? dont know whether to go with the copper or metal, i have a 88 supra.

well copper is metal...
so your title is alittle weird.
but anywho.

if your going to run some big time boost, then go with a copper head gasket.
they cost some money tho...
a nice steel gasket wont cost quite as much and will seal just as well and perform just as well under normal operating conditions, even under elevated performance conditions the steel gasket will still do the trick.

i mean ill be running 32psi and im rocking a 3 piece steel gasket.im not a fan of copper gaskets because they seal to well.
id rather blow a head gasket instead of a motor...
not running a copper gasket can act as kind of a safety in a sense.


but the point here is what kind of power do you plan to make and how are you going to make this power?
motor swap, t78, t88, huge turbo? nitrous?
big ass turbo with a shot of nitrous to help with the spooling issues?
lots of info left out that needs to be taken into consideration before making a decision.

 

if you have the original 7M-GTE in your supra i would think steel would be okay

i'd agree 1.8t on the copper. if your running big boost don't go copper, save your block/head. if you're going N/A get a real thin copper head gasket and get your deck and or head shaved...

ok, the thing is, a copper gasket will seal well for most applications. however, if you plan to boost big, then the 7MGT-E like to have the block o-ringed and an HKS metal headgasket is good. there are three types of gaskets, stopper, bead, and grommet. the application will be dependent on the gasket you choose. either way, if you do this, you'll also want to get a set of ARP headstuds to seal and hold the torque applied to the head. you'll also need special machining when doing a metal headgasket.

 

what about cometic head gaskets? that was recommended to.
btw....its non-turbo, but maybe will come later...?

Cometic is fine. insist on stainless steel inserts. you can also specify layers.

 

go with the HKS bead type gasket... jsut make sure that both mating surface is straight and has a RA finish.... this will seal up good and I have been running this HKS 1.2mm bead gasket on my supra and no problems at all

BTW if going with metal headgasket... change the head bolts too with ARP head studs and torque the heads to 80 ft lbs
